The client had relocated a 25 MW generator set to Denmark. Due to the energy supply balance in Denmark, in particular renewable energy versus other fuels, there are times when quick start, generators are required to supplement the power generated by wind.

This unit is such a generator and will be started remotely from the local grid control centre. It was anticipated that the unit would run limited hours per year.

The existing control system was obsolete and unsupported. Greenray were contracted to upgrade the control system to a modern Siemens S7 standard.

The engine/equipment

What we worked on

The upgraded engine was a Frame 5 Gas Turbine Generator Set, being relocated and installed into a new Power House.

Meeting the customer's requirements

Since the installed control system was obsolete Greenray engineered a Siemens S7 based upgrade, incorporating a number of software enhancements.

At the same time the client was installing other ancillary upgrades which required significant changes to the control system logic.

The solution

Upgrading the system

The scope of the upgrades was:-

  • Siemens S7 Control System Upgrade
  • Enhanced Turbine Flame Detection
  • Anti-Icing Control
  • Fire & Gas System Logic upgrades

The upgraded system was required to integrate with ancillary equipment upgrades that the client implemented at the same time as the turbine control systems upgrade.

Greenray project managed the specification, engineering, procurement, build, witness test, installation and commissioning work.
